Apartment

Apartments are the same dimensions, and are modular in nature, allowing elements such as the kitchen and closet to be fabricated off site and install on site, significantly lowering construction time, cost and labor.

Linear in nature, the apartment flows as a cohesive whole, without the need for excessive walls and divisions that make the space feel smaller.

Elements such as the dinning table and the Murphy bed are designed to adapt to the users needs, and can be deployed when needed, and stowed away when not needed. Careful consideration and care is given to ensure that elements do not impede on each other, and can function in different usages of the same space.

*excerpt from design development*
Subdivided flats are often characterized by their tight living spaces, clutter, poor air quality, and dim lighting. Sharing the same building parameters, the 8’2” ceiling height creates a sense of suffocation within the small space, creating pockets of dead air of which air cannot circulate properly, and is overall dimmer since sunlight does not permeate deep into the space; hence the design solution of raising the ceiling height by 3’3”, creating a significantly higher visual height, since elements are not separated by walls and do not reach the ceiling, this creates better airflow, as well as daylighting.

The raised ceiling height also creates an opportunity for an attic storage, providing flexibility with objects, and reducing unwanted clutter, items such as out-of-season clothes, decor, books etc can be stored without being within the living area, rejecting the cluttered characteristic of subdivided flats. The storage itself is accessible via a collapsible attic access ladder, which pulls down onto the corridor and can be accessed anytime.

Fresh air is allowed to circulate deeper into the space due to the lack of floor-to-ceiling elements, all the way from the balcony to the HVAC vent located near the entrance, creating a cross ventilation when the balcony door is opened. The HVAC is also located above the bathroom for a simpler HVAC management.

The attic storage is occupies the adjacent space next to the HVAC, and is located directly above the foyer area, accessible via an attic ladder.

Unlike typical apartments, where the living room, dinning room and kitchen are separated to a certain degree, these elements overlap each other and occupy the same space.

An collapsible attic ladder provides access to 170ft3 of attic storage, providing flexibility in living and reduces unwanted clutter, allowing unwanted items such as out-of-season clothing to be stored away when not needed.

The bathroom is compact in nature, while still providing significant shower space, which are fully lined with low maintenance shower tiles. The lack of a shower enclosure makes the space flow as one, and more straight forward.

Storage and display area, with integrated dinning table and chairs that can pull out when needed. Murphy bed area functions as a small office space during the day. Every square inch of the cabinet is ultilised so its fullest and  has its functions, even the top can be used as a temporary storage space if absolutely needed.

One wall kitchen fully equipped with a stove, sink, built-in, fully hidden trash bins, hood and drying dish rack. Deep counters allow for bigger storages, which is essential for a small living space. Monolithic vertical design without excessive lines creates a clean visual language that extends the verticality of the space.

Large balcony windows draws in a large amount of sunlight, accompanied by the tall ceiling height, bright but warm wall colors and a linear layout, the apartment looks and feels bigger. By placing the storage near the door, thus creating a low ceiling height, it allows for a strong visual contrast with the rest of the apartment. Residents enter into a space with a small ceiling height, as they progress into the space, the ceiling opens up to a much bigger space.

Multiple elements take up the same space, the clearance required by multiple elements : entry door, bathroom door, and the attic access, is considered simutaneously, Hence creating a tight relationship between each element.

This project ultilises the 606 Universal Shelfing system by Vitsoe, modular shelfs that are adjustable and can be pair with different after-market parts, allowing for more flexibility in living in such a small space. The bed is directly accessible from the main corridor, the removal of walls is deliberate to make the small apartment space flow smoothly as one cohesive whole.

The Table

The dissolve and merging of the living room, dinning room and kitchen calls for a set of dinning table that needs to be incredible flexible. The built-in dining table and chairs are designed to be nested within each other, and provides flexibility in living, each component can be pulled-out to be used anywhere within the apartment.

Each set of table comes with 4 small chairs, made with simple oak or medium density fiberboard, the chairs are designed to be easy to construct, without the presence of any complicated hardware.
